India Joins Paris Climate Change Agreement, Submits Instrument Of Ratification At UN Headquarters

India formally joined the Paris Climate Change Agreement by submitting its instrument of ratification at UN Headquarters in New York on October 2, 2016. The instrument of ratification was deposited by India's Permanent Representative to the UN, \ Ir. Sved Akbaruddin. By putting the seal on the climate deal, the country will now urge the global community to adopt 'Gandhian way of life' (shun extravagant lifestyles) to reduce their carbon footprints and protect the earth from adverse impact of climate change. Environment Minister Mr. Anil Niadhav Dave said that India had led from the front to ensure the inclusion of climate justice and sustainable lifestyles in the Paris Agreement. He said that apart from emission cuts, India also focuses on measures that involve broader participation. People in the developed countries live extravagant lifestyles with high carbon footprint. Simple everyday changes in lifestyles, when practised by a large number of people around the globe collectively would make a huge impact, he said.
Congratulatirg, India for its climate leadership anti building a strong momentum for the agreement to enter into force as quickly as possible in 2016, United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon said that India's ratification of the agreement moved the world an important step closer toward achieving that goal. The UN Secretary-General also acknowledged India's decision to submit its instrument of ratification on the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi which also coincides with the International Day of Non-Violence. India, accounting for 4.1% of the total global emission, has become the 62nd country to ratify the Paris Agreement. With India on board, the total emission share of these countries reached 51.89% mark—just 3.11% less than the emission threshold to bring the Agreement into force. Once EU (28 nations), accounting for 12.1% of the total Global Emission, joins it, the deal will enter into force after 30 days

DELHI'S AIR QUALITY • VERY POOR

SAFAR: According to 'a re­cent report of System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), national ,capital NeW Delhi's air quality was recorded in the 'very poor' category in October 2016. The average (24-hour rolling) of PM2.5 and PM 10, suspended respirable pol­lutants, were recorded as 120.8 and 248 micrograms per cubic metre as against safe limits of 60 and 100. The poor air quality may lead to respiratory problems, irritation to eyes and  skin, blurring of vision  and headache. The major reasons for the poor air quality may due to the favourable cold weather conditions coupled with very light wind, vehicular pollution and farm fires in neighbouring states of punjab , Haryana.

T.N. TOPS LIST OF ENDEMIC FLOWERING PLANTS

A recent publication by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), in October 2016, revealed that almost one of every four species of flowering plants found in India is en­demic to the country. Of these, Tamil Nadu accounts for the highest number of species with 410, followed by Kera­la with 357 and Maharashtra with 278. Of the 18,259 flowering plants report­ed in the country, 4,303 (over 23 per cent) are found only in India. When it comes to the geographical distribution of endemic plants, the Western Ghats tops the list with about 2,116 species, followed by the Eastern Himalayas with 466 species. According to scien­tists, these two regions are among the biodiversity hot spots of the country..

INDIA 39TH MOST COMPETITIVE ECONOMY IN THE WORLD

WEF: As per the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) Report 2016-17, released by the World Economic Forum in September 2016, for the second year in a row, India climbed 16vositions to occupy the 39th spot in the index. While it stood at 71th position out of the 144 nations ranked in 2014-15, in 2015-16 its ranking climbed to 55th spot. In 2016-17, it has again climbed 16 places to move to the 39th spot. The betterment of India's ranking marks an improvement in competitiveness on several fronts including efficiency in goods market, business sophistication, and innovation.

NEARLY 80% OF DIVORCED INDIAN MUSL WOMEN

As per a recent Census 2011 data on m tus of Indians, for every divorced Muslim man, four divorced Muslim women. Across religious nities, except Sikhs, there are more divorced woi men. INDIA SANITATION CONFERENCE:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 30 September 2016, inaugurated the India Sanitation Conference (IN­DOSAN) in New Delhi. The conference discussed on the steps to make India Open Defecation Free (ODF) by 2019 by construction of individual, cluster & community toilets and by keeping villages clean via solid and liquid waste management through Gram Panchayats.During the conference, Prime Minister Modi gave away cleanliness awards to Sindhudurg District (Maharashtra), Mandi district (Himachal Pradesh), Pune, Chandigarh and Mysore Municipal Corporations, Gangtok city (Sikkim), National Ca­det Corps (NCC), Surat railway station, PGIMER Chandigarh, heritage site Rani ki vav in Gujarat and Kendriya Vidyalaya FRI Dehraclun.

BRICS SUMMIT 2016

The 8th BRIGS summit was held at the Taj Ex­otica hotel in Benaulim, Goa, India, in October 2016. The two-day sum­mit was attended by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese Pres­ident Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Michel Temer and South African President Jacob Zuma. The theme for the summit was "Building Responsive, Inclusive and Collective Solu­tions". This was the second time that India hosted the BRICS summit after being host of the fourth BRICS Summit in New Delhi in 2012.The summit concluded with adoption of Goa Declaration. The other sideline events that took place are:  


·      The first BRICS film festival was held at New Del­hi from 2 September to 6 September 2016. The five-day film festival screened four films each from the participating states.

·       The environment ministers of BRICS states held a meeting on 16 September in Goa and they agreed on a memorandum of understanding and an­nounced the setting up of a joint working group institutionalizing their cooperation on environ­ment related issues.

·               The agriculture ministers of BRICS nations held a meeting on 23rd September in New Delhi.

·      The first trade fair of the BRICS countries, was held at Pragati Maidan exhibition ground, New Delhi from 12 to 14 October. Controversially, China skipped the event over trade barriers.

·              The first BRICS U- 17 Football Cup was held at Goa from 5th to 15 October.

INTERNATIONAL PRIZE IN STATISTICS 2016

Noted British statistician Sir David Cox was, on 19 October 2016, named the inaugural recipient of the International Prize in Statistics for Survival Analysis Model Applied in Medicine, Science, and Engineering. Cox has been specifically recog­nised for his 1972 paper in which he,developed the propor­tional hazards model that today Bears his name.The Cox Model is widely used in the analysis of survival data and enables researchers to more easily identify the risks of spe­cific factors for mortality or other survival outcomes among groups of patients with disparate characteristics. From dis­ease risk assessment and treatment evaluation to product liability, school dropout, reincarceration and AIDS surveil­lance systems, the Cox Model has been applied essentially in all fields of science, as well as in engineering.

CHAPLIN AWARD FOR ROBERT DE NIRO

The Film Society of Lincoln Center, in October 2016, announced Robert De Niro as the recipient of the 44th Chaplin Award. He will be presented with the award at an award gala on 8 May 2017.De Niro is an Italian-American actor and produc­er who has starred in over 100 films.He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jake La Motta in the 1980 film Raging Bull.
