Maharashtra cabinet on October 4, 2016 approved 40 hectares in Marathwada's Hingoli district for setting up the Laser Inferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) to observe gravitation waves. Significantly, the government made the announcement at a specially convened cabinet meet in Aurangabad.
The observatory will be located in Dhudhala village of Aunda-Nagnath in Hingoli district. Once completed, this will be the third laboratory in the world to study Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. The other two observatories are located in the US's Washington and Louisiana states. They are operated by the prestigious Caltech and MIT universities respectively.
The LIGO project is run with the collaboration of 90 universities and research in stitutions. 30 people of Indian origin are part of the LIGO project in the US.
