0 UN raises red flag for Indo-Bangla power plant in Sunda rbans

Citing concerns over the impact on the Work Heritage Site in Sundarbans, including the Royal Benga Tiger, the United Nations (UN) on October 18, 201E recommended that Bangladesh cancel the proposer 1,320MW thermal power plant in Rampal and relocate it.

The power plant, called the Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, is a joint venture between India anc Bangladesh, costing an estimated $1,680.2 million. It is to be executed by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Private Limited (BIFPCL).


196 countries sign deal to curb HFCs

India joined 196 countries, plus EU, on October 15, 2016 to seal a legally binding deal that aims to reduce climate damaging greenhouses gases in products ranging from airconditioners and refrigerators to shaving foams—a pact which will come into effect from January 2019 for developed countries such as the United States but much later for developing economies.

The deal, which was approved in Kigali, Rwanda, or the back of India's strong support, aims to substantially reduce the use of the super greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), by the middle of this century.


This will help the planet avoid 0.5 degree Celsius d warming and complement the Paris Agreement on climate change. The new deal will aim to keep the average global temperature rise within 2 degrees celsius above the pre-industrial level by the end of the century.


0 World Tsunami Awareness Day to be celebrated on Nov 5

The First World Tsunami Awareness Day will be celebrated on November 5. To commemorate the occasion, an event will be organised with Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Champions at the Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016


The Conference is being organised from November 3-5 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi by the Government of India in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).



0 Paris climate pact to come into force on November 4

The United Nations announced on October 6, 2016 that the Paris agreement on climate change will enter into force on November 4, paving the way for the participating countries to frame rules and guidelines for its implementation. The UN announced the date for entry into force of the global climate deal after 11 more countries and the European Union submitted their instruments of ratification, crossing the threshold of 55% of the total global emission share mark.



 0 SAARC summit postponed


The SAARC summit was formally postponed after Nepal, the current chair, notified it on October 2, 2016. In a strongly-worded statement, the Nepalese foreign ministry said the regional environment was not conducive to enable . a SAARC summit at this point and it would be postponed
This is not the first SAARC summit to be postponed. In 2005, Manmohan Singh refused to travel to Dhaka for the summit in February after Awami League leaders were killed. The summit was postponed to November of that year.
 

BRICS adopts declaration for education

The BRICS nations on September 30, 2016 adopted the New Delhi Declaration on Education' resolving to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all.
 
The declaration was adopted in New Delhi at a conference of Education Ministers of the BRICS nations, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, held to discuss and coordinate areas of mutual interest and develop framework for future cooperation in the field of education.

0 OPEC seals deal to cut oil output

Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) agreed on September 28, 2016 to cut its oil output for the first time since 2008 by nearly a million barrels a day, with its leader Saudi Arabia softening its stance on Iran amid mounting pressure from low oil prices. The group would reduce output to 32.5 million barrels per day from current production of 33.24 million bpd
