In its bid to facilitate corporate participation in sanitation-related in¬frastructure projects, the Union Urban Development Ministry has launched the portal swachh.org which hosts city-specific details of works.
The private entities funding sanita¬tion and cleanliness works in cities can now use this government portal to track real-time progress of projects to find out whether their money has been spent properly. A dozen private entities have joined this portal since it was launched on September 30. Till now, corporates had few details available about projects they could take up because there was no central pool to get this kind of infor¬mation and were concerned about the proper utilization of their money. The portal covers the full cycle of projects. The municipal bodies can upload projects for which they need to raise funds from CSR donors. Corporates can go through the projects and take up the ones they find perfect for them. After signing an online agreement, they can release the funds online and the agency will keep uploading photographs of progress to enable the donor and the public to track the progress.
The need for such a platform arose because Central government funding for city level is sometimes short of the actual requirements of cities and cities are required to raise the shortfall from other sources, such as private sector par¬ticipation, beneficiary share, user charges, Swachh Bharat Kosh and corporate social responsibility funds.
