South Africa to withdraw from ICC

South Africa on October 19, 2016 decided to withdl from the kiternational Criminal Court (ICC) following
dispute last year over a visit by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted by the tribunal for alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

The decision comes after another African nation, Burundi, signed legislation to become the first to withdraw from the ICC, raising concerns that states have begun to act on years of threats to leave over what they call the court's disproportionate targeting of the continent.

The Islamist party, which has headed Morocco's coalition government since Arab Spring-inspired protests five years ago, beat liberal rivals, in parliamentary elections on October 8, 2016.


Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane's Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) took 125 seats out of 395. Its main rival, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which had campaigned against the "Istamisation" of Moroccan society, won 102 seats. Istiqtal, the party which historically fought for independence from France, came third with 45 seats.
