MWR for Farm Workers to be Raised

In a step forward to provide a big relief to farm workers, the Union Labor Ministry has decided to enhance the minimum wage rate (MWR) to Rs. 350 per day for unskilled agricultural labor in C- class towns in central sphere to be effective from November 1, 2016.
At present, agriculture workers in the central sphere are paid as per the rates prescribed under the National floor level minimum wage, which is fixed at 160 per day.
The Minimum Wages Act, 1948 will be amended for setting a benchmark minimum wage across the country, to be called as "Universal Minimum Wage". Once it is amended then it will become statutory and all the state governments would have to apply the same standards of wages.
