Is It "OK" to Canvass Under the Garb of Religion?

The Supreme Court said that seeking votes in the name of religion is "evil" and cannot be permitted, but declined to re-examine its 1995 judgment, which held that Hindutva relates to a "way of life" and not just a religious practice. This could be deciphered as a "missed opportunity" by the SC to really make canvassing less polarizing in the event of looming State assembly election in UP and Punjab. It is well speculated that there would be lots of venomous and religion-colored canvassing in these important States.
Under the Representation of the People Act, promotion of, or attempt to promote, feelings of enmity or hatred on grounds of religion, race, caste, com¬munity or language, by a candidate or his agent, amounts to "corrupt practice", and election of the candidate can be set aside on this ground.
But a three judge in held '1995 that "unless the context of a indicates a contrary meaning or the abstract, these terms (Hind Hinduism) are indicative more of of life of the Indian people and confined merely to describe practicing the Hindu religion as a Hence, it said, using these terms not impact the validity of ele any candidate.

Recently, a seven-judge C tional Bench led by Chief Justice the country. We will see what needs to be done. We will examine the question relating to making public the name of big loan defaulters and examine whether further information needs to be called from the RBI."
Bhushan had informed the court in February that the problem of advancing loans to undeserving borrowers was not confined

only to Hudco, but extended to several other financial institutions, including public sector banks.
Referring to a report in a newspaper, he had said that, in 2015 alone, banks had written off loaris to private parties to the tune of Rs 40,000 crore. He said bark had restructured bad debt worth Rs 3 lakh crore in the past few years
