The Supreme Court on October 18, 2016 asked Karnataka to keep releasing 2,000 cusecs water to Tamil Nadu on daily basis tilt further order and directed governments of both states to take measures to control public agitation on water dispute and maintain law and order.
The SC had ordered Karnataka on October 4 to release 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu from October 7-18. Earlier on September 30, the SC had ordered Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu from October 1 till October 6. Karnataka had initially defied this order, as it had done with three earlier orders last month.

0 SC: Widow sole claimant of dead man's pension
Only the widow, and not the mother of the deceased, is entitled to his pension on his death, the Suprenie Court said on September 29, 2016. However, his properties would be divided among his mother and widow, according to the Hindu Succession Act, the apex court ruled.
A bench of Justices A R Dave and L Nageshwar Rao faced a tricky question while deciding this dispute between the mother and wife of deceased Haryana government employee Yash Pal. While the widow laid claim to her late husbands pension, the mother cited the Hindu Succession Act to stake her claim.
0 Saraswati river did exist: Govt panel
A government expert panel, constituted to look for the existence of the river Saraswati, submitted its report on October 16, 2016, claiming that the river did actually exist in ancient times. Professor KS Valdiya, an eminent geologist, led the panel.
The report says while one-third of the river's stretch fell in present-day Pakistan, the remaining stretch of 3000 km fell in India. The report has been prepared by a group of geologists, who are experts and wellknown across the world for revealing the hidden truths of land texture, rocks and mineral treasure. The report will be studied by the Central Ground Water Board.
