In a stunning reprisal for the Uri terror attack that breached decades of self-imposed restraint, India conducted "surgical strikes" on seven terrorist "launch pads" across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of September 29, 2016.
PM Modi gave the go ahead for the surgical strikes on September 27, after a series of briefings in the South Block. It was "not possible to immediately quantify" the number of terrorists killed in the strikes carried out by crack Para-Special Forces who simultaneously hit five launchpads located 1.5-6.5 km inside PoK. According to an initial estimate, as many as 40 to 55 terrorists were killed. But it will take some time to arrive at the approximate number of casualties.
Pak goes to World Bank on Indus pact
A day after approaching the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the Indus Waters Treaty amid reports that India may revoke the 56-year-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), Pakistan discussed the issue with the World Bank on September 28, 2016. The World Bank had helped broker the pact, which outlines how the waters of six rivers (Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum) are to be shared between the two countries, in 1960.
India may drag Pak to WTO on MFN dispute
A meeting was convened by PM Modi on September 28, 2016 to explore the option of dragging Pakistan to the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) dispute resolution body for refusing to reciprocate for 20 years India's granting of the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to Pakistan. Like the Indus review, the MFN exercise is intended to impose costs on Pakistan for the terror attack that killed 18 soldiers at an army camp in Uri.
Under the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements, countries cannot normally discriminate among their trading partners. If a country grants another country a special favour (e.g. lower customs duty on imports) then it has to offer the same favour to all WTO members.
