India Joins Paris Climate Change Agreement, Submits Instrument Of Ratification At UN Headquarters

India formally joined the Paris Climate Change Agreement by submitting its instrument of ratification at UN Headquarters in New York on October 2, 2016. The instrument of ratification was deposited by India's Permanent Representative to the UN, \ Ir. Sved Akbaruddin. By putting the seal on the climate deal, the country will now urge the global community to adopt 'Gandhian way of life' (shun extravagant lifestyles) to reduce their carbon footprints and protect the earth from adverse impact of climate change. Environment Minister Mr. Anil Niadhav Dave said that India had led from the front to ensure the inclusion of climate justice and sustainable lifestyles in the Paris Agreement. He said that apart from emission cuts, India also focuses on measures that involve broader participation. People in the developed countries live extravagant lifestyles with high carbon footprint. Simple everyday changes in lifestyles, when practised by a large number of people around the globe collectively would make a huge impact, he said.
Congratulatirg, India for its climate leadership anti building a strong momentum for the agreement to enter into force as quickly as possible in 2016, United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon said that India's ratification of the agreement moved the world an important step closer toward achieving that goal. The UN Secretary-General also acknowledged India's decision to submit its instrument of ratification on the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi which also coincides with the International Day of Non-Violence. India, accounting for 4.1% of the total global emission, has become the 62nd country to ratify the Paris Agreement. With India on board, the total emission share of these countries reached 51.89% mark—just 3.11% less than the emission threshold to bring the Agreement into force. Once EU (28 nations), accounting for 12.1% of the total Global Emission, joins it, the deal will enter into force after 30 days

SAFAR: According to 'a re­cent report of System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), national ,capital NeW Delhi's air quality was recorded in the 'very poor' category in October 2016. The average (24-hour rolling) of PM2.5 and PM 10, suspended respirable pol­lutants, were recorded as 120.8 and 248 micrograms per cubic metre as against safe limits of 60 and 100. The poor air quality may lead to respiratory problems, irritation to eyes and  skin, blurring of vision  and headache.
